On Your Way to Success, Change Your Bad Habits: A Motivational Video
People have their own habits, whether good or bad.
On your way to success, your bad habits may prevent you from achieving your goals.
For example, overweight may represent a threat to your work, social life and of course your health.
According to behavioral psychology, people usually fall into a bad habit when they become under stress.
In order to give it up, you should first prevent yourself from the joy you find when you do that habit.
Overeating, for instance, gives us the joy of tasting food.
If you would like to change this bad habit, punish yourself by, for example, extending the time of your daily exercise
or by giving up dessert for two days.
In this way, you will think twice before doing your favorite “bad” habit.
Finding an alternative is another step on your way of changing your bad habits.
If you are lazy, for example, and always miss your deadlines to enjoy relaxation, you should substitute it with a reward that gives you the same joy but in a positive way.
That is, you may give yourself a short break after ending each task you do
or reward yourself with a longer holiday now and then if you achieve one of your goals in your life or at work.
Sometimes we can motivate ourselves to change our bad habits by telling others about our plan to give them up.
This “negative motivator” may fire our enthusiasm to avoid the feeling of shame or letting down the people who count on us.
Another motivator to part with bad habits is to convince yourself with better reasons.
We all know that smoking and overweight are unhealthy and giving them up will help us restore our health and good shape.
This is really fine but sometimes it doesn’t work because of the joy we feel in overeating or smoking.
A better reason could be that restoring our health and good shape will help us live longer with our loved ones as well as help them to be proud of us.
We all know Robert Downey Jr., the Iron man. He is a typical example of a person who changed his bad habits to achieve his goal.
Unfortunately he was introduced to drugs at the age of 8 and became an addict in his 20s when his reputation as a good actor was growing.
He was arrested many times for drug addiction and spent a whole year in prison.
However, Mr. Downey was determined to change this bad habit and went to a rehab center twice.
Restoring his life and career was his better reason to give up addiction. And now he is one of the best Hollywood stars.
So, it is you who decide when you give up a bad habit and how.
Behavioral psychology says the best timing to change your bad habit looms over when you start something new.
For example, when you apply for a new job that requires good health and looks, it is the right time to give up your bad habits.
As the ex-President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam once said:
“You cannot change your future, but you can change your habits and surely your habits will change your future.”
